Antony Starr's performance as Homelander- the devious and complicated Vought universe version of Captain America meets Superman- in itself is enough to warrant this show a one time watch.
I am not sure of the extent to which it involved prosthetics and make-up but there is so much Starr expresses with his face that you don't need scenes shot in extensive CGI to establish that he is far from the squeaky clean "righteous" superhero that Marvel and DC have been shoving down our throats in various forms over the last two decades.
There are moments when Starr exudes honesty, innocence, limitless strength and a levelheadedness that you have come to like and support because subconsciously you associate these qualities with the 'Good' side in the fight between good vs evil.
But something does not sit right, like an unpeeled layer. Something about his smile, something about how he looks at you.
I won't go into the details, but getting that doubt into your mind, boy that takes some skill.
And even after the layer is peeled (this is not really a spoiler), Homelander continues to be a complicated character and portraying him convincingly is no small feat.
It is how it is in real life.
Some people have a built-in mental switch to turn their charm on or off as they see fit.
And that can be quite scary.
